Tevin Campbell
Comment:
Believe it or not, Tevin Campbell was barely 11 when he was first touted as Quincy Jones' protégé, a claim backed up by the buttery, Michael Jackson-like melodies (circa the Jackson 5) of the #1 R&B single "Tomorrow (A Better You, Better Me)." Campbell's career was off to the races once that jam dropped, too, beginning with his appearance in the Prince film Graffiti Bridge. The funk legend was also stunned by Campbell's natural-born-singer abilities — enough so that he wrote and guested on the gold-certified "Round and Round," an instant hit that dropped punchy beats and slithering horns behind Campbell's smooth harmonies. As the singer aged, he managed to sell millions of albums with his career-defining solo discs T.E.V.I.N. and I'm Ready — fitting introductions to Campbell's honey-dipped croon, from the slow-burning "Can We Talk" and "Tell Me What You Want Me To Do" to the strut-your-stuff vibe of "Just Ask Me To."
