They called her Sassy, and one listen to the fiery, live scat-swinger "Sassy's Blues" will tell you why. But that fun-loving nickname captures only part of the mystique of Sarah Vaughan. A Jersey girl who became a citizen of the world, Vaughan built her legend on a vocal tone that was sleek and silky, deep as the ocean and rich as rare spice. And that's just the tone; a former bandmate of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, she was a true jazz musician — one of the first singers to take on bop phrasing — and a master of improv who could send her vibrato fluttering through a devastating "Poor Butterfly," as easily as she jazzed up lush-lounge popular tunes like "Moanin'." Backed only by bass and guitar on the Duke Ellington classic "Sophisticated Lady," Vaughan shows just how well the standard suits her. It just doesn't get more Essential than Sarah Vaughan.
