Similar Sounds - The World of Mary J. Blige
Comment:
When the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul told us, “I’m the only woman you need,” we knew she wasn’t lying. Still, we just can’t deny that she came up with some of the finest full-throated women ever to step to a microphone. Singer-songwriter (and onetime Mary duet partner) Faith Evans slinks through “Love Like This” as if she’s Mary’s mirror-image, her church choir-coached vocal pouring over a Chic bassline like single-malt scotch over ice — a cocktail that’s cool and warm all at once. SWV’s remix of “Right Here” laces a sample of Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” over a speaker-decimating beat, transitioning from a ballad into the ultimate club jam; this is the sound of hips twisting, bodies brushing, and homegirl fantasies unfolding. And T-Boz’s huskily rasped vocal, like silk snagged on a rock, snakes through sparse, beat-driven sonic terrain on TLC’s “Creep,” the trio’s multiple, crazy-sexy-cool personalities never sounding crazier, sexier, or cooler. But that’s not all: from Janet to Whitney, from worked up to laid-back, we’ve got plenty more sounds of Mary’s many sisters.
