The Mary J. Blige Legacy - The World of Mary J. Blige
Comment:
Mary owned the last decade of the 20th century — and the 21st century already has her stamp all over it. Peep the body oil- and incense-scented lyrics of Jill Scott’s “A Long Walk” and you’ll hear an indie-soul cousin basking in the freedom forged by Mary’s hip-hop-soul revolution. Then there’s Keyshia Cole, who kicks it a cappella at the start of “Let It Go,” diving headfirst into very-Mary lyrics (Girl, keep your dignity, even if ya man ain’t feelin’ you . . .) and playing the role of a ’hood Dear Abby. And the around-the-way wisdom filtered through Alicia Keys’ “No One” is served up piping hot, with catch-in-your-throat singing and misty-eyed, head-nodding signifying as Ms. Keys shares her world; her stark-naked emotion seems to flow directly from one of Mary’s gospel revival-style shows. But we’re just getting started: From Fantasia to Joss Stone, the daughters of Mary come in all colors and genres — and we’ve got ’em all right here.
