Altan
Comment:
Major players in the revival of traditional Irish music, Altan was born in the late '80s, after fiddle player and singer Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh teamed up with Belfast-born flutist Frankie Kennedy. Joined by a passion for the then little-known style of Donegal music (and each other — they married in '81), the pair brought on like-minded musicians, becoming famous for a sound propelled by dual fiddles and a fresh, modern take on authentic songs like "Donal Agus Morag" and rich instrumentals like "King of the Pipers." Tragically, Kennedy died from cancer in '94, but Altan lives on, mining the rich sonic history of its homeland; our Altan Essentials brings its finest into one simple download, with Celtic classics — including "'Si Do Mhaimeo I," and "Stor, a Stor, a Ghra" — that speak a universal language.
