Clannad
Comment:
King Crimson reedman Mel Collins pushes "Autumn Leaves Are Falling" from the GRAMMY®-winning Landmarks album into an uncharacteristically jazzy space, proving the band wasn't content merely to reign over the new age musical terrain they had so long dominated. "Uirchill an Chreagain," with its cathedral-like reverb and just a trace of synth pads for accompaniment, unlocks all the hues in Maire Brennan's crystalline vocals, like a stained glass window catching small flashes of sun in a sacred space. And in sharp relief, "An Gabhar Ban" from Clannad 2 sounds like an entirely different band, as an almost prehistoric Clannad capers to the lilting of tin whistles and flatpicked mandolin with only the barest hint of the transformation that was in store. What a difference two and a half decades makes!
