Blessed with a voice like caramel and a genius for poetic cynicism Kirsty MacColl ranked among the finest homegrown laureates of witty, bittersweet pop despite her reputation as a covers specialist — she did well with "Days" (the Kinks) and "A New England" (Billy Bragg). She may have inherited a love of wordplay from folk legend dad Ewan MacColl but the spirit and delivery were inimitably her own.
