Boney M.
Comment:
The brainchild of German producer Frank Farian (who would go on to create '80s chart imposters Milli Vanilli), disco-pop four-piece Boney M. enjoyed a sensational run of hits in the second half of the '70s, by matching insanely catchy melodies to an eccentric variety of lyrical themes. Through the band's chart-conquering bubblegum we learned of Tsarist-era svengali Grigori Rasputin ("Russia's greatest love machine . . . to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear"), the troubles in Northern Ireland ("Belfast"), and the pain of a college trained artist who sells out to make ends meet ("Painter man, painter man/Who wanna be a painter man?"). They're still huge in India and Vietnam.
