Comment:

Nothing lasts forever, especially in the dog years of pop stardom. Any smart ’70s-era artist who hoped to thrive — or even survive — in the ’80s immediately grasped video’s clout, and reached out to MTV to help them reach a younger audience. Elton John sheds his boas in favor of a boater, stepping from behind the keys to in front of the camera with “I’m Still Standing,” a personal reflection and professional statement all rolled into one. Mick Jagger and company drop a bay-rum scented Caribbean groove smack dab onto an East Village stoop, renewing their cool credentials for another generation, in the Stones’ “Waiting On a Friend.” And if you have any doubt whatsoever about video’s career-rebooting power, consider Tina Turner. Thirteen years from her last hit — at the age of 45 — she struts onto the scene with a soul-scorched anti-valentine, demanding, “What's Love Got To Do With It.” Even British Invaders like the Kinks and love children like the Starship drank deep from MTV’s fountain of youth — and they’re all just a mouse-click away.
