Comment:

What singer wouldn't want Van's words in their mouth? Only the timid, the tame, or the tin-eared — and you won't find 'em here. In the U.S., the Shadows of Knight (not Them) chalked up the hit version of “Gloria,” a garage-rockin' replica of Them's original, while Patti Smith's stream-of-consciousness punk makeover is nearly unrecognizable, until "G-L-O-R-I-A!!!" erupts like steam from a boiler just before it explodes. Nancy Wilson guides "Moondance" through a jazz club's blue haze and sits it down by the piano, but Michael Bublé decks it in Armani, cues the orchestra, and . . . it's showtime, folks! And Dusty Springfield floats like quicksilver over "Tupelo Honey," every syllable starched-linen crisp, while Cassandra Wilson dives headlong into a smoky-sweet abyss found somewhere between Curtis Mayfield and Peggy Lee. As you'll hear, artists from John Mellencamp & Me'Shell Ndegeocello to Jimmy Buffett turn to Van to deliver soul — and body — with every stroke of his pen.
