The Van Morrison Legacy - The World of Van Morrison
Comment:
What better legacy — in the literal sense — could a man leave than a daughter who cut her baby teeth on a mic cable? Shana and Dad duet on "Sometimes We Cry," her angel-in-fishnets delicacy anchored by performance and pedigree to Van's earth-rooted growl. With a bone-weary sigh dredged up all the way from the soles of his shoes, Jeff Buckley opens a seven-minute loser-takes-all tug-of-war between celebration and lamentation in his minor-key cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." And, sure, the sha-la-la-la-la-las in Counting Crows' "Mr. Jones" came straight from the "Brown Eyed Girl" makeup kit, but singer Adam Duritz pulled out a packetful of sad as well, and the infamous Morrison Melancholy nips at his heels like Nick Drake's black-eyed dog. From the adult alt-pop of John Mayer to the pub-thrashing punk of Black 47 — and more — four decades of artists have carted off a Van-load of ambiance.
