Comment:

There's no simple way to sum up Donny Hathaway's talents. A gifted singer, songwriter, musician, and producer, he put 100 percent of himself into every minute of music. Whether turning up the heat with a funky groove, showing his sensitive side on blissful ballads with Roberta Flack, or tapping into his spirituality to move some musical mountains, he was responsible for a batch of tunes that defined '70s R&B. Decades after his death, Hathaway is George Washington on neo-soul's Mt. Rushmore, and his gift keeps on giving. In 2006, a version of his signature tune, "A Song for You," performed on American Idol brought a new wave of interest in his work, and he was name-checked in one of the next year's biggest hits ("Rehab" by Amy Winehouse). True soul never dies.
