After the artistic triumph — and commercial failure — of [i]Forever Changes[/i], Love began to fall victim to drug use, and Lee completely repopulated the lineup, moving it in a more complex, if even [i]less[/i] commercial, direction. His final shot on Elektra, [i]Four Sail[/i], pretty much closed out the band's ride up fame's roller coaster, and they departed for what they hoped would be a new beginning on the Blue Thumb label. Proving everything old is new again, Love recut "Signed D.C." (from their debut album) on 1969's [i]Out Here[/i], recasting it as a roadhouse blues and pushing it to nearly double its original length. With its down-and-dirty fuzz-bomb guitar tearing through buzz-saw licks, "Stand Out" splits the difference between Creedence and Hendrix, while [i]False Start[/i]'s "The Everlasting First" even [i]features[/i] Jimi on guitar, shredding his way around Lee's throat-tattering vocals.
