One of the reggae greats, John Holt is best known to casual reggae fans in the U.K. as the man who wrote and first performed "The Tide Is High" in 1967 (later a hit for Blondie) as frontman of the Paragons, and — once he'd gone solo — took the Kris Kristofferson cover "Help Me Make It Through the Night" into the Top 10 in 1974.
