Singer, songwriter, and keyboard player Donald Fagen undertook his first solo tour in 2006, but he's no new kid on the block. He cofounded Steely Dan in 1972 with Walter Becker, and has recorded in his own right (starting in 1982 with [i]The Nightfly[/i]) since then, punctuated by the occasional band reunion. All the elements that had made the Dan's slick, jazz-based pop fusions so appealing — sharp lyrics, production finesse, masterful arrangements — are characteristic of Fagen's three studio outings to date. Highlights here include "New Frontier" (a smooth, funky exploration of American paranoia and fear during the Cold War era) and the title track from 2004's cheerily morbid [i]Morph the Cat[/i] (a smooth, funky exploration of American paranoia and fear post-9/11).
