There was always more than a hint, in the finesse of David Sylvian's work as Japan's frontman and principal songwriter, that a solo career would bear incredible fruit . . . and so it proved. Beginning in 1982 with "Bamboo Houses" — a hook-up with friend and favoured collaborator Ryuichi Sakamoto — Sylvian set about his fascinating exploration of pop's less-charted waters, taking in jazz, ambient composition, and prog.
