Comment:

No one could do ’em faster . . . or louder — so any artist daring to cover the Ramones had better dig deep. On its grease-painted face, Kiss seems like everything the Ramones rebelled against, but they shared an audience, an attitude, and the joy of a transistor radio glued to a teenage ear. Their three-ring-spectacle cover of “Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio” comes equipped with — literally — every bell and whistle the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra can bring in support. Tom Waits takes his cover in exactly the opposite direction, tearing off the cheery façade of “Danny Says” to reinvent it as a down-tempo diary entry on the bone-crushing weariness of road life. And Brit alt-folk-rocker Thea Gilmore wraps an acid tongue around “Don’t Come Close” in a whisper-to-a-slam kiss-off from someone way out of your league. As you'll hear, artists from Alternative TV to Yo La Tengo turn to the Ramones for a can’t-fail wedge of pop-punk purity.
