Comment:

The Ramones didn’t cut live records — they shredded them. And we’re hand-delivering front-row-center tickets to their all-time best live show . . . that never was. Waxed on New Year's Eve 1977, It’s Alive trimmed every ounce of excess fat off the era’s double (and yes, occasionally triple) live albums. How lean was it? They shave nearly ten seconds off “Blitzkrieg Bop” — which was only two minutes long to begin with — making a song that was already ferocious devastating. Dumping a load of Rockaway Beach sand on the Roxy stage, the Ramones’ cover of “California Sun” tears open the original with a chainsaw-guitar assault that leaves no ear unpierced. On Loco Live, they power though “Rock ’n’ Roll High School” at Mach 8, and the Clorox-on-the-rocks snarl of “I Wanna Be Sedated” leaves no room for doubt: they need to be sedated. Don’t stop there, though — this is the closest you’ll ever come to that CBGB concert you were too young to see.
