From the Lower East Side to London, the Ramones set the stage for the ’77 punk explosion. No, they weren’t punk [i]per se[/i], but Cheap Trick sure raised snotty to an art form — and then polished up the mess with pristine pop. Their concert-opening, barbed-wire guitar barrage “Hello There” — clocking in at 1:38 — bolts through the “wham bam” without an instant to spare for the “thank you, ma’am.” CBGB goddess Debbie Harry may have bought her tan at the salon, but you’d never guess it as Blondie goes surfin’ NYC-style in their beach blanket blowout, “In the Sun.” And if you ever needed proof that the Ramones ran the British Invasion right back to the motherland, cue up “Pretty Vacant” by their angry cousins, the Sex Pistols, who shared an appreciation for the short, sharp shock of a stinging, ringing hook.
