A true musical polyglot, Joe Strummer reveled in the results of giddy musical culture clashes, using them to fire his "fight the power" sociopolitical cannonballs. He first recorded New Orleans R&B staple "Junco Partner" as a reggae tune with the Clash, but his solo take adds Latin and country/folk flavors to the tale of a man under society's thumb. Strummer's we-shall-overcome message takes your spirit on a soul elevator with the Jimmy Cliff reggae rabble-rouser "The Harder They Come," featuring California ska-punks Long Beach Dub All Stars. The Johnny Cash-like acoustic travelogue "Cast a Long Shadow" eerily underlines the titanic dimensions of the footprint Strummer left when he passed from the earthly plane too soon. Whatever that elusive quality called "soul" really is, he had it in spades.
