Comment:

The unfettered fury of his punk past never left Joe Strummer's work, even when he was crafting movie soundtracks or immersing himself in a global-beat carousel with his band the Mescaleros. He was a rock 'n' roll David who took a Goliath-sized bite out of life, his zeal electrifying every step of his musical odyssey. We've gathered the best of his solo work — encompassing 20 years and six albums (plus extras) — in one place, providing you with a passport to a universe of sounds. Indian bhangra beats, rockabilly moves, hip-swiveling Cuban conga grooves, beatnik prose, skittering electronics, deep dub basslines — everything was fair game, the whole world's musical traditions offering low-hanging fruit that Strummer happily tossed into his beatbox blender. His quest for justice and unity was wrapped up in that recipe, and survives in every one of these songs.
