Kathleen Edwards
Comment:
How is it that Canada produces so many great female singer-songwriters — Joni Mitchell, k. d. lang, Sarah McLachlan, Jane Siberry, the McGarrigle sisters, Loreena McKennitt, Lynn Miles, and now Kathleen Edwards? Must be something in the ice. Splitting the difference between Gillian Welch's alt-country and Cowboy Junkie Margo Timmins' whisper-soft rock, Edwards spills her voice out like so much Grade-A maple syrup over songs that are unexpectedly insightful for someone yet to hit 30. Hell hath no fury like a scorned singer, and Edwards amps up "Back to Me" with a shotgun blast list of the tricks she might use to bring home a lover who's strayed. "In State" carries bitterness to a new level when she almost clinically dissects a lying ex-boyfriend who's about to pay — with a stretch in the pen — for crimes of the heart and the law. And she throws in the metaphoric towel in "Hockey Skates" when she sings, "I'm so tired of playing defense/And I don't even have hockey skates."
