Comment:

Sure, college gave us frat rock, but over on the other side of campus, a more graceful, refined, high-gloss sound played to sophisticated ears. The Church's dream-pop masterpiece, "Under the Milky Way," paved the way for a generation of shoegazers, as Steve Kilbey's little-boy-lost vocal and Marty Willson-Piper's jangly acoustic guitar balance delicately against — get this — a synthesized bagpipe solo. Thank director John Hughes' Pretty In Pink for introducing America to Echo and the Bunnymen's ghostly, beautiful "Bring on the Dancing Horses," with Ian McCulloch's reverb-drenched vocals floating over the shimmering waves of guitar like feathers on an angel's wing. Is there such a thing as pop perfection? Paul Weller comes close in the Style Council's slice of Continental café soul, "My Ever-Changing Moods," its horn section crisp as an Armani shirt, every drum fill and four-bar guitar solo set in place with the cool precision of James Bond at a Monte Carlo baccarat table. From Elvis Costello to Kate Bush, we have every track you need to earn your grad-pop diploma — with honors — just a mouse-click away.
