SoCal Punk - School of Rock: College Rock, Vol. 1
Comment:
New York and London got all the press — and most of the big record deals — but make no mistake: SoCal's scene rocked the punk landscape like an 8.5-magnitude quake. Maybe the scene's great unsung heroes "Hollyweird's" Weirdos didn't cut punk's most famous neutron-bomb track (that would be the Dead Kennedys' "Kill the Poor"), but "We Got the Neutron Bomb" got there first, with a gut-churning howl of rage kicking the door down to an anti-war screamfest. With the start-stop herky-jerk of a teenager learning to drive stick, Germs frontman Darby Crash lurches through "Lexicon Devil" with its "gimme gimme this, gimme gimme that" chorus as if he knew he had to grab for every last instant before the bomb ticking inside him went off . . . as it did, two years later. And Bad Religion just wants out — and now — in their vocal-cord-shredding convulsion of manic panic "F**k Armageddon . . . This Is Hell." From Social D to Suicidal Tendencies, we'll bring the glory of Madame Wong's and the Cuckoo's Nest slamming straight through your ear buds.
