Ragtime
Comment:
Ragtime's heyday ended in the early 1920s when Dixieland jazz became the order of the day, but that primeval ragtime swing was permanently stuck in America's ear, with revivals cropping up every few decades. Dick Hyman is best known for scoring Woody Allen movies, but "A Barrel of Keysy" makes it clear that he's a man in a ragtime state of mind. Country-folk guitar god Doc Watson's 1966 take on James Scott's "Victory Rag" shows that piano-pounders don't have a monopoly on ragtime. Even jazz-age popular standards like Fats Waller's sly-boots pledge of devotion "Ain't Misbehavin'" have ragtime in their blood, with those rippling rag piano rhythms ringing out as unmistakable as fingerprints.
