Robert Glasper
Comment:
Pianist Robert Glasper's trio revitalizes the jazz tradition, injecting an adrenaline shot of hip-hop-schooled rhythms into the bebop bloodstream. On "F.T.B." drummer Damion Reid's doubled-up breakbeat grooves charge the air around Glasper's bell-like melodies. The young pianist's work with hip-hop heavyweights like Mos Def and Q-Tip shaped the way he sculpts his sounds, and "J Dillalude" (his tribute to late hip-hop producer J Dilla) moves more like a street-beat mixtape than a conventional jazz tune. For all his forward motion, Glasper has his jazz history down cold, which becomes obvious when he kicks up a ruckus on Herbie Hancock's "Riot." This sampling of Glasper's finest wares shows how he's picked up on the innovations of pianistic peers like Brad Mehldau and Jason Moran, and advanced even further into the future of jazz.
