The Raveonettes
Comment:
True to the shadowy film noir nods of their album covers, the Raveonettes look and sound as if they stepped out of a black-and-white screen overrun with hard-drinking detectives and lip-pursing femme fatales. That, or a distortion-doused garage/girl-group compilation that celebrates "Louie Louie" and the Shangri-Las. Case in point: the Danish duo's effortless cover of the Angels' "My Boyfriend's Back" — a '60s standard reimagined with a punchy drum-machine pulse. As strong as that song is, don't let it trick you into thinking the Raveonettes are nothing but a retro-rock act. Fact is, their originals hold up as well today as they would've decades ago, whether it's the slick surf-guitar groove of "Love In a Trashcan"; the bent and beaten-down chords of "Aly, Walk With Me"; the top-down, seize-the-summer pop hooks of "That Great Love Sound"; or the dark and deviant Jesus & Mary Chain-isms of "Beat City" and "Attack of the Ghost Riders."
