Discoveries - World of Neil Diamond
Comment:
Somewhere, over the course of Neil’s 50-plus albums, we bet you overlooked a few of his best tracks . . . but so did radio, so we forgive you. The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” has seen more covers than a supermodel, but Neil reinvents the song by swapping its cotton-candy prettiness for a ruggedly dramatic vibe, slowing it down and making you believe he’d be utterly devastated without his one true love. Diamond strips Tennessee Moon’s “Everybody” down to the solitary — and amazing — voice of “Solitary Man,” reminding us of his early career’s stark honesty, which he’d recapture with producer Rick Rubin on 2005’s 12 Songs. And if you like your Neil king-sized, check out the sequin-spangled splendor of “Hey Louise,” a hidden show-stopper from the Jazz Singer soundtrack. Let’s face it: we can’t expect everybody to be obsessive Diamond-o-philes like us, so we’ve gone through every recording, track by track, to bring you the best of what you (and most everybody else) missed.
