Comment:

When you’re a triple threat of an artist — a singer, a songwriter, a live force of nature — it’s only natural that generations would come ’round for inspiration. Chris Isaak ripped a page from Neil’s solitary-man stylebook (heck, he’s even covered “Solitary Man”), and on “King Without a Castle” he serves up a double helping of heartbreak with a steamy side of sighs. Can it get any sadder? Absolutely. Check out Richard Ashcroft in “Break the Night With Colour,” wandering through a bleak landscape of soul-crushing isolation, building to an anguished cry of orchestral grandeur. And if any rocker could stand toe-to-toe with Diamond as a world-class showman, it’s U2’s Bono, hurling himself, voice first, over the pulse-pounding Bo Diddley beat of Rattle and Hum’s “Desire.” If John Mellencamp’s “Cherry, Cherry”-inspired salute to ’60s pop, “R.O.C.K. In the U.S.A.,” and the Wagnerian theatrics of Meat Loaf’s “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” are any indication, there’s more Neil than you know in your iTunes library.
