Comment:
The subtitle of this mix should be "Don't Hog the Prog, Pt. 2", but I didn't have the heart to formally put it in the title. This is intended to be a companion piece to Sean's "Don't Hog the Prog" mix, which should be completed sometime in the near future (he's waiting on some prog dubs from deep in my vaults). This two-pronged homage to our truly geeky, pre-punk musical roots was the product of much discussion over the past couple of months and was originally intended to be a collaboration, but as we disagreed a bit on the direction of the mixes (not that it was an acrimonious disagreement), we decided to make them sister mixes. My end of the mix has more of on "art rock/Krautrock" than "prog rock" feel (although I understand that it's a slight distinction) and I readily admit that it was tough determining if the Soft Machine or Fred Frith qualified as "prog rock." I stand behind and love all of these songs. Title from the Genesis track. [Extensively revised on 3/6/05.)Feedback:
oh shit , this could be my worst nightmare , i gotta do the kill all hippies mix now, maybe it just me who don't understand ;-)

ha ha ha,come back Sting everything is forgotten ;D
no schicke, fuhrs and froehling??? shame shame. i'm about to post a new mix that also features a peter gabriel/genesis song from the famous charisma label's 5th anniversary album.
I had an idea to do something like this, Rob. You have beaten me to the punch, my friend. Great minds think alike? I especially like the Can and traffic pix. Prog has taken a bit of a kicking at various times over the past quarter century, but there was much nuggets amid the dross, as this excellent compilation shows. I have to have a copy of this at some point Rob.
Just listened to it, Rob. I think this is awesome. It's easy to slam prog, but goddamn, some of it is still very listenable. Not a whole lot of Rush, mind you (though they'll show up "Don't Hog the Prog" vol. 1), but clearly the early Genesis and all the stuff you have here. Without prog, there would be no Radiohead or Fucking Champs, etc. Bravo, Rob-o. Long live songs about elves and mythical winged beasts!
I like this, though, as you've suggested, it stretches the boundaries of prog a bit. Inspired Yes and ELO picks, and plenty here I'd love to hear.
Some good stuff here Rob....,(I always thought people bought the Amon Duul lps for the art ;-D) I'm with Gerard and Sean, some of it can be "dross".., but like any other genre--when you find the pearls, OH MY! This does seem to beg for a collaborative, multi-volume enterprise.
We came,we saw,we CAN!
Lots of great artists here; a good idea to start with King Crimson & to end with Can.
I also love the Van der Graaf Generator track!

Holy hell, how did I not see this one until now? Here's another one to add to the pile once I get around to copying that one I'm supposed to do for you (no, I haven't forgotten)...
I'm with p the swede here, sorry;), i can't understand the proggy stuff, some Tull, Can & Amon duuls Phallus dei lp is OK i think, i'm a big fan of 60s psychedeila so actually i should be into prog says some friends, i think Police did some great songs on their first and second album,
Don't make me break out the Henry Cow & Faust.
How would you "define" prog to someone who didn't know what it was. I never thought that Tull fit in with the rest of these, other than maybe the time period. Am I wrong? I could see ELP in it's place on this mix. I like the cuts I know here.
great stuff.
