Maria McKee's voice makes an emotional circuit that delivers a powerful jolt to the ears and the heart, and that soul connection sparkles like a roman candle in her live performances. The fog-enshrouded, film-noir mysterioso feel of "This Perfect Dress" gains all the more gut-level impact in concert. She can reinvent her own history onstage too: the fragile intimacy of McKee's solo-acoustic take on Lone Justice's "Shelter" is the funhouse-mirror image of the original's widescreen production. Other artists have tapped into McKee's live-wire electricity as well; you can hear her making like a roots-rock Tammy Wynette to Dwight Yoakam's George Jones on hardcore honky-tonker "Bury Me" from Dwight's debut.
