Comment:

While I was compiling my Stooges mix today, I couldn't help but think of the MC5... and this is what resulted. Although I've shied away from doing this comp in the past due to the fact that I think "The Big Bang!" is a pretty comprehensive summary of this band, I elected to forge ahead anyhow, making alterations when I saw fit by adding some personal favorites neglected by the folks at Rhino. At any rate, I think it's interesting to note that while "High Time" has the least amount of songs represented here, it is the *most* represented in terms of the amount of time used on the disc (and it's my favorite album by the band, so that's all right by me). Although I really like the MC5 a lot, I want to add that I think this band is definitely overrated by hipsters worldwide and that when it comes down to it, they were a great (and marginally experimental) boogie-rock band (albeit one with a pseudo-"revolutionary" agenda at the outset), *not* a "punk" band. The massive twin guitar attack of Fred "Sonic" Smith and Wayne Kramer is utterly undeniable, however, as is the thunderingly great quality of songs like "Sister Anne", "Over and Over", "Ramblin' Rose", "The American Ruse", "High School", et. al. I wish I would have had enough room for "Call Me Animal" (the last song cut).
