Comment:

Soul Asylum started out as a rabid pack of road dogs happy to jump in a van and howl out some manic-edged, punk-schooled rock 'n' roll. Their shaggy-haired, flannel-flying image, hard-edged sound, extreme dynamics, and D.I.Y. ethic all anticipated/influenced the coming of Nirvana and the grunge nation. But their aims were higher, and they honed their craft as they plowed through endless tours and low-budget recording sessions, until they emerged in the early '90s as kings of the alt-rock hill with a sound owing as much to classic rock as to their Bob Mould-produced early albums. You can hear the whole process play out right here, as the band moves from frantic punk explosions to big-production power ballads without ever losing their rock 'n' roll soul.
