The Sundays
Comment:
British band the Sundays first hit it big Stateside with the melancholy storyteller "Here's Where the Story Ends," but the group got about as far as it could get from sad conclusions. Picking up in the early '90s, the Sundays built on the foundations laid down by their jangle-pop predecessors, adding shimmering hints of other worlds to songs whose concepts were beautifully simple. Tracks like "Love" and "Goodbye" got their depth from the (now-married) songwriting team of guitarist David Gavurin and vocalist Harriet Wheeler — their feel for ethereal atmosphere and lyrical lushness made it easy to get lost in the dreamy soundscapes of everything from their moody Stones cover, "Wild Horses," to the warm and lazy luxury of "Summertime." Download The Sundays Essentials, and you get just that — the band's very best, from the hits to the underrated album tracks (check out the hushed, intimate sounds of "Folk Song") to rockin' rarities like a naughty-and-nice "Don't Tell Your Mother."
