From Across the Pond - School of Rock: College Rock, Vol. 2
Comment:
Even more than Rolling Stone or Spin, Britain’s NME and Melody Maker topped every modern music junkie’s must-read list. As the second British Invasion — originally started by punk — gave way to a slicker, poppier sound, college radio traded in its Chuck Taylors for Doc Martens and once again set trends that the mainstream would, eventually, embrace. Ian McCulloch's swoon-inducing vocals swirl into the stratosphere on Echo and the Bunnymen's dreamy, dance-y “Lips Like Sugar,” a sumptuous slice of post-punk pastry. Gorgeous waves of synth and guitar wash over the desolation beach of Cure frontman Robert Smith’s heartbreak in “Pictures Of You.” And even the chirpy cheer of a Farfisa organ can’t break through the grey-sky gloom of Madchester architects Inspiral Carpets in their sad-bastard ballad “This Is How It Feels.” From the Smiths to XTC, all of Her Majesty’s finest musical exports have docked right here . . . after passing through the port of college radio.
