Comment:
How big is Michael Jackson’s impact on pop? Just look at the range and depth of artists who’re dying to try their hand at his hits. Former Soundgarden/Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell de-funked “Billie Jean” and shot it through with the blues, reinventing the song so dramatically that when American Idol finalist David Cook performed Jackson’s song, it was Cornell’s version he turned to for inspiration. Miles Davis pays Michael a legend-to-legend compliment, substituting a double-dry-martini trumpet for Jackson’s vocal in a cool-school jazz reading of “Human Nature.” Ex-Temptation David Ruffin was almost 30 when he cut “I Want You Back”; Michael was only 11 when the Jackson 5’s version hit the charts. Even though both had the benefit of the Hit Factory’s Funk Brothers backing them, Ruffin’s version is, well, manned-up in a way that only experience — which Jackson would later gain — can bring. Don’t stop there, though: from Fall Out Boy to Mariah Carey, when it comes to Michael Jackson being covered, we’ve got you covered.
