Legacy - World of Michael Jackson
Comment:
In a culture in which superstardom is fleeting, Michael Jackson was the gold standard for four decades; so much so, it seems every few years we were treated to a "new Michael." In the '90, it was Usher's turn, and a decade later his crunked-up "Yeah!" (featuring the ubiquitous Ludacris) was one of three chart-topping singles from Confessions. Chris Brown was hailed as the new Usher . . . up 'til 2007, when his GRAMMY® Awards performance (not to mention his note-faithful cover of "Thriller") touched off a new volley of Jackson comparisons. He splits the difference between Jackson and Prince on the Underdogs' beat-driven smooth groove "Is This Love?" And just to prove how Michael's star shone across racial and spatial divides, consider ex-Mouseketeer/former boy-band singer Justin Timberlake, whose duet with Clipse, "Like I Love You," echoes Jackson's falsetto-tinged R&B from "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." Check out our playlist for even more artists who wanted to be like Mike.
