As dark and downright dangerous as most guitar-toting acts want to [i]appear[/i], few bands [i]ooze[/i] equal doses of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll quite like the Kills. Primed for maximum impact as a slim-and-sadistic two-piece, Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince (aka VV and Hotel) trade vocals and licks like jilted lovers clad in nothing but black and damaged leather. To make things even more minimal and menacing, the cold, calculated percussion of a drum machine often peeks out from the lo-fi mix, lending a gut-punching low end to such tracks as "Love Is a Deserter," "U.R.A. Fever," and "Sour Cherry." And then there's the way a synth (or is it a severely mangled guitar chord?) is turned into a skin-crawling layer of smoke in "No Wow," a song that nails the mission statement of "Cheap and Cheerful": "I want you to be crazy/'Cause you're boring, baby, when you're straight."
