In the late ’60s and ’70s, Philly soul draped a crushed velvet — yet [i]stone cold[/i] — groove over the very foundation of R&B, courtesy of swoon-inducing strings, hypnotic rhythms, and a stable of artists topped off by the O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, Patti LaBelle, and the Intruders.
