They came from the churches of the South, shouting for salvation with angelic voices raised high — old-school jubilee-quartet-style gospel groups like Swan Silvertones, Sensational Nightingales, Dixie Hummingbirds, and, of course, those sightless sermonizers Five Blind Boys of Mississippi and Blind Boys of Alabama. The Good News never sounded so good, and over the decades, endless variations on gospel grew from the deep roots of the Deep South.
