Funk burst onto the Bay Area scene at the tail end of the '60s, when old-school R&B beefed up its attack and put some bounce in its bottom end. The rainbow-colored profile of bands like Tower of Power and Sly & the Family Stone matched their swirling stew of throw-a-hip-out grooves, big-block rock riffs, and pop hooks that just got deeper and deeper as the bands kept funking forward.
