One of rock's great, and most rewarding, slow-burners, John Hiatt had been there or thereabouts for more than a decade by the time he ushered an album into chart territory — 1987's [i]Bring the Family[/i], featuring Ry Cooder on guitar and sitar — first as a Nashville-based songwriter, then as the nearly-artist who couldn't quite break through, despite outstanding tracks such as "Riding with the King" (later covered by Eric Clapton and B.B.
