What began as a Genesis side-project spearheaded by guitarist Mike Rutherford — chiefly to keep him fresh and creative while Phil Collins went off on his solo jaunts — built up a considerable presence in its own right, based on exceptional musicianship and a smooth, soulful approach to chart-friendly pop-rock. Former Sad Cafe frontman Paul Young would share the vocal duties with Paul Carrack (ex-Squeeze) on Mike & the Mechanics' self-titled 1985 debut, which produced the singles "Silent Running" and "All I Need Is a Miracle". Worldwide #1 smash "The Living Years" would follow in 1989. Young died in 2000, and 2004's immaculately produced [i]Rewired[/i] will most likely stand as the outfit's swan song.
