Newton-le-Willows is an unlikely entertainment hotspot: not only did the unassuming Merseyside town host the first performance by ukulele legend George Formby, but it also gave us Rick Astley, the soul boy whose rich vocal seemed to have been imported from another planet. Discovered by Pete Waterman from the '80s hit factory Stock Aitken Waterman, Astley made a huge impression with his solo debut, "Never Gonna Give You Up" — the top-selling single of 1987.
