During her teenage years, Montreal's Luba Kowalchyk made a name for herself by performing traditional Ukranian folk songs, but that was just a prelude to her pop triumphs of the '80s, several of which appeared on her Daniel Lanois-produced 1984 full-length debut, [i]Secrets and Sins[/i]; "Everytime I See Your Picture" remains a power ballad for the ages, full to the brim with guts, glamour and passion. The follow-up, [i]Between the Earth & Sky[/i], gave us "How Many," featuring a sax solo by Kenny G., and among the A-list session musicians on 1989's [i]All or Nothing[/i] were piano/keyboard maestro Paul Schaffer — better known as David Letterman's bandleader/comic foil — and guitarist Mike Campbell from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. All of which makes this Luba overview a gold-plated '80s treat.
