Comment:

From its earliest spins on low-watt, high-cred college stations to its complete domination of all things radio, alt rock left too big a footprint for a single playlist. So we’ve returned with a second helping. With small-town roots and big-time angst, R.E.M. strikes at Gen X’s core philosophy in “Losing My Religion,” a Kodak moment of ambivalence with a side of jangly guitar. Don’t just take our word for it; both NME and Melody Maker named “Cannonball” — the Breeders’ sexy, seductive mash-up of grunge and goofiness — Song of the Year. And if you had any doubt how mainstream alt rock had become, Soul Asylum (thanks largely to the success of “Runaway Train,” their rootsy account of a life gone off the rails) performed at President Clinton’s inauguration in 1993. From the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the Beastie Boys, Counting Crows to 10,000 Maniacs, this is the perfect place to catch up on the life-altering alt rock that was just too important to overlook, too colossal to contain.
