P.O.D.
Comment:
"God has a bigger plan for P.O.D.," Sonny Sandoval — the band's dreadlocked frontman — once said as he turned down a $100,000 record contract. Boy, was he right. At the time, P.O.D. had already tore up the West Coast and much of Middle America in support of a stunning self-released trilogy: Snuff the Punk, Brown, and the mosh pit-imploding Payable On Death live album. Sure enough, all that hard work led to a major-label deal with Atlantic and an audience that was clearly ready for a simmering, straight-outta-"Southtown" (i.e. San Diego) brew of hardcore punk, dub reggae, bottom-heavy metal, and fleet-fingered jazz. Simply put, P.O.D. has become the Bad Brains of the nü-metal generation, as proven by such genre-jumping singles as "Boom," "Alive," "Addicted," and the spot-on soundtrack selections "Sleeping Awake," from The Matrix Reloaded, and "School of Hard Knocks," from Little Nicky.
