Comment:
A break from the micro-scruff: time for a little fun!This an attempt to marry the brand new material off Mr. Jones' "Heathen"(a throwback to 'Scary Monsters', 'Buddha of Suburbia' and 'Never Let Me Down'; & some tracks that revive the staccato lyrical style of his short-lived Tin Machine), with days of old. My knee-jerk reaction is to savor the drug induced creativity of pre-'74 Bowie only...but there are some new musical treatments present here;
like killer use of under-toned dog-alto sax & bass-lines that are to die for. The new
album's a grower. There are some 'syrupy' songs that I left out; the standout tracks-* are presented here, mixed in with similar guitar twangs and vocal styles from previous incarnations. Bowie co-wrote both Iggy Pop selections and sings
backup harmony on the Ronson track;
The guitars represented, even in this small sampling, include: Ronson, Robert Fripp, Pete Townsend, Reeves Gabrels, David Grohl, David Torn,
Lenny Kravitz, Earl Slick, Sid McGinnis, & Peter Frampton.

Feedback:
Thanks for the feedback on my review. Love it, pro or con This looks cool. I could make the similar mix, might add "Teenage Wildlife". I don't agree with the Diamond Dogs comparisons either. Yes there's always a vocal inflection here & there but your selections match up the Heathen guitar and voice very nicely. Nice bolt, btw. Cheers!
Been a bit hesitant to grab Heathen. All the geezers seem to dig it, so I may have to take the plunge. Not too often that a disc comes out that I can simply drop into the cart at Target. Don't forget Carlos Alomar's nice tones on some of those '80s tunes.
Like lo-fi I am "hesitant" on any new Bowie....thanks for the assurances g.a.b. (@ the labs) that this IS worthy of my wife's hard earned money.....heh heh....I think anything from Scary Monsters would've been worthy....will the REAL Mr. Bowie please stand up, and SING! THX again g.a.b. Huzzahs for the mix! It has me thinking!
ahem ...(let me adjust my false teeth): Carlos appears again on Heathen as well (Torn is the main guitar, then Bowie, then Townsend, then Alomar and finally Mark Plati). Bulk of the album is just Bowie, Visconti and Matt Chambers (on drums).
Listening to Bowie is always a workout for me...this one took 3-4 listens before I got it all down (and figured out what to mix it with)...there is some crap, some syrup but 7-8 good songs as well (outta' 12...not bad). "Sunday" is kinda' cool, a grower, but I had room for only so much.

Good-looking mix. Interesting to see Tin Machine represented, too, that's something which I don't seem to see here much...
under-toned dog-alto sax ???
very cool, senor labs. i'm still working on the bowie back catalog, so heathen isn't even on my radar just now. i need more time to digest everything else!
how could i miss this, great but don't you think Heathen is a dissapointment?
p , when I first played it, I was ready to pitch it (or use it for 2nd base)...but it has grown on me and I have been listening to it a lot lately (via this mix). Sure, there isn't a "Watch the Man," "Cracked Actor," "Moonage Daydream," or "Black Country Rock," on board, but I do think it's a solid album: I dig "Heathen", "5:15", "Hi", and "Cactus" especially; I do not care for "Slip Away" (with it's syrupy, whiney vocals ), "Afraid", or "I would be your Slave" (or the Neil Young cover), but 7 out of 12 songs are, I think, decent Bowie...but if you mean: "it ain't no LOW or HUNKY DORY...that's fr sure (uh huh, uh huh)...I think his age is showing up in his less aggressive approach to extreme-rocker/riveting lyricist and he's coming on with a softer approach: disappointing if one still demands a pre-1974, albeit older version of the man...but OK if, as a fan, you're giving him "permission" to move onto new frontiers. I don't do the things I did in my twenties & thirties...and it looks like he doesn't want to be "stuck" in his past.
my goodness I am a windbag...!
