Comment:
An experiment -- I hooked up a portable tape player to my pc and dubbed some songs from cassette to digital. Since most of my collection is on tape, this gives me more options for more mixes! Unfortunately, because I don't have a line-in on my pc, I have to use the mono connection through the mic jack. Then there's the issue of tape deterioration. I feel like this is the digital version of sticking an external mic up to a speaker, like I had to do with my first record player! For myself, the drop in sound quality is acceptable, at least until I have better equipment. I'm wondering what y'all think of these results, so comments are appreciated. BTW, the cat's name is Magic. Did someone mention Karn Evil 9 last week?
Feedback:
Here kitty, kitty! Actually based on the comment I made on lo-fi's mix, you probably don't want me anywhere near your cat ;) As for the mix, this looks pretty cool. I wish I could do the same with my massive collection of cassettes, which are accumlating dust in the closet. Are the limitations of cassette tape exaggerated in the CD format? Your description reminds of the days when I used to place my portable Radio Shack tape deck next to the speaker while waiting for my favorite top 40 song came on the radio.
...to come on the radio.
*I* mentioned "Karn Evil 9" last week on Sean's prog mix, stating how much I absolutely despise it. Other than that, this mix looks pretty great. :-)
Yes, Ion, transferring cassette to MP3 definitely reveals limitations in the source tape. I especially had problems w/tapes where the original recording level was high, or I had played the tape so much that there was a lot of snow on playback. Transferring it to CD made the loss of clarity and fidelity that much more apparent. I too had a Realistic tape recorder that I used to tape 3 songs from Blizzard Of Oz off the radio before it was released. Great memories!
Yes, Rob, I remember...and thanks for the inspiration ;-) Actually, the tape I took it from is so old, my liking the song doesn't make it sound any better on this disc!
Cool mix Scott, nice choices all around. Magic is a cool name for a cat. I had a cat once and she was named merlin.
If you're able to move your stereo next to your PC, (or, if you have a laptop...place laptop atop the turntable dustcover), then you can tie the PC directly into the stereo via the PC's headphone jack and record without the extra noise; better sound, less work !!
I'm always concerned about the wires not being compatible in the doomaflitchy port....um, anyway, about the mix...like the Eno/Byrne cut....
Love the squeeze song, like the mix, and dig your cat!
Some nice stuff on here, Scott. Dig your cat too - my boyfriend's cat is named "satan", which is a name I like even better (cos it's black).
Wow, you have so many mixes, and they're all amazing! I aspire to be like you. :)
You want to be like me? Keep collecting music, get older, gain weight and develop an obsession for this stuff like the rest of us! :-)
Ideally get yourself a wicked soundcard...I have a SoundBlaster Audigy platinum with a front input dock....my recordings from cassette to digital have been excellent! Of course the card cost about $200 US!!
Nice cat, Back to Mono!!! Nice mix too, Winterlong is one of my abs favs by Neil Young.
