Comment:

Few would have foreseen the Herd as a hip-hop supergroup in 2001, but that’s exactly what the outfit has become. By combining the fierce and articulate immediacy of rap (thanks to MCs Ozi Batla, Urthboy, and, prior to his 2006 departure, Berzerkatron) with the musical versatility of a fleshed-out, party-starting band (featuring electronica genius Unkle Ho, Traksewt’s signature accordion and the smartly deployed softening vocals of Jane Tyrrell), the Herd has consistently energised our brain cells while keeping us poppin’ like bottle tops: “77%” threw down a gauntlet to racism in the wake of the MV Tampa fiasco; “I Was Only 19” updates Redgum’s classic ’Nam narrative; and “The King Is Dead” from 2008’s “Summerland” gives John Howard a send-off we’ll never forget.
